Paint Finishes
There are several types of paint finishes you can choose from that are readily available in the market. These finishes generally have certain types of surfaces which they are best applied to, so as to maximize their effectivity.
Glossy and semi-glossy finish - Like the name implies, this type of pain finish reflects light quite better than any other paint finish when it dries. This type of finish is a popular choice for rooms and areas that see the most wear-and-tear, such kitchens and bathrooms, and is also used on surfaces known to take a beating, like floors, handrails, cabinets and other furniture, and even on doors and trims. Gloos and semi-gloss paint finishes are relatively easy to clean and can prove to be more resistant to common stains.
Satin finish - This type of pain finish is also known as the eggshell finish, for obvious reasons. The end effect gives off a soft luster, comparable to what you see on the surface of a clean egg. This type of finish is quite durable, and is ideal for use in high traffic areas in the house, such as stairways, children's rooms and the living room. For interior wall applications, a satin finish is quite good.
Flat and Matte finish - This type of paint finish is popular for its ability to hide small surface imperfections, due to its ability to absorb light, rather than reflect it, like other types of paint finish. This type of paint finish is recommended for areas that receive little traffic, as it does not wash as well as the other types of pain finishes.
Now that you know the various types of paint finish, you are better equipped to make an informed decision as to what type of paint finish you will use in your house. Parts of the house that see little to less traffic and activity would best be applied with a flat paint finish, this also holds true if you are trying to cover up some imperfection or minor flaw in the surface of an area. Be warned though, that a flat paint finish is notoriously harder to clean than other pain finishes.
Areas of the house that see medium to high traffic and activity would best be painted with a semi-gloss paint finish. Semi-gloss is more durable than a flat paint finish and can be cleaned a bit easier, providing a surface that is not too dull and not too shiny.
Finally, areas of the house that is commonly frequented the most by people would best be applied with a high gloss paint finish, and you will be glad with yourself if you do indeed follow this piece of advice. High gloss paint finishes stands up to a good deal of punishment and will clean quite well. This makes it a good choice for both interior paint color combinations and exterior paint color combinations.
