Hiring a landscape architect may be the right choice for you if you have a lawn that is larger than 2500 ft. sq. Lawns that are this size and bigger can have very complex root systems, trees, walkways, or different freestanding buildings. You may also consider a landscape architect if you have deep slopes in your yard. They will have a degree from a university and a license to work in the state you live in. They will hire her or subcontract out the work that needs to be done, but will usually supervised to make sure the work is getting done properly.
You could go directly to the source and hire a landscape contractor. Many people have done this and do not have a problem. Most professional landscape contractors will recommend that you hire an architect just to make sure, kind of like getting a second opinion. Make sure that your landscape contractors are licensed, bonded, and insured to operate any heavy equipment that made needed to be use. Many bulldozers or backhoes will be needed to be used in order to grade your yard.
Make sure you take your time and do your due diligence before hiring any architect or contractor. Get three different estimates from three different architects or contractors. Then you will need to get three references from each company that is bidding. This job is going to cost a lot of money and will impact the value of your home. This is going to be a huge investment for you and your home, so make sure you treat it like one.
